Nona is the Managing Director of Akkam Immigration and Allied Services, an immigration company that primarily works with and for women. In a conversation with You & l, she tells us how delighted she is to be working with a team of talented and hardworking women, and shares her thoughts on women's empowerment.


What made you start Akkam Immigration and Allied Services?


Earlier, I was working with another Immigration Company and had a good professional reputation as a branch manager for several years. The experience there was good in many ways, but not entirely satisfying. Thanks to my upbringing, I have always believed that women should have an even playing field in business in India, as is the case in more emancipated societies. After a break, I thought of starting an immigration company that would primarily be staffed by women, and give the utmost attention to women clients. Currently we have Akkam Immigration and Allied Services operating in Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chandigarh. And we are planning to extend our expertise and services to other clients too, and to core countries like Australia, Canada, the USA, Denmark and many others.


How did you build your all-female team?


Many of my friends and colleagues were thrilled at hearing the concept of our mission and wanted to join in the effort. But we could only afford to have a brave Minimum Staff on board to start off with. Now we’re gradually expanding our operations with the core managing team comprising women. I must say it's a very fulfilling experience to work with a team of dedicated and like minded women.


What is your take on women's empowerment?


In a country where women are not treated on an equal fooling in the spheres of fundamental rights, social status, democratic, religious, domestic, and professional fields, it is long overdue that they should be free of these inequalities. Today's women have made some gains but still have a long way to go!


Women's empowerment should not remain a populist slogan. There should be specific, institutionalized processes in place to guide and help women attempting to venture into the professional domains, which so far have been dominated by men. Unfortunately we have not yet had such concrete help.


If not for this, what career would you have taken to?


Hospitality and tourism. I have traveled widely around the world and am excited to learn that the world is now becoming more cohesive and is cutting across man-made barriers.


How do you spend your free time?


I read and monitor the media for the current and likely prospects of a good society. Above all I enjoy spending quality time with my son.


What is your greatest achievement so far?


Winning the trust of friends, and of Clients with whom I have been in contact.


And your idea of perfect happiness?


My inner self remaining content and at ease that I have a clear conscience. I do what I feel is the right thing to do; nothing is greater than right living. Happiness is when you feel good about yourself.

Life over the Horizon


It is truly said by Christopher Mccandless, " The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun ".

When I was a teenager, the West ,as always, seemed the epicenter of possibility and opportunity. Through this article I want to share my experiences as a young immigrant in the western world over the last 20 years . I was only fifteen years old when my parents decided to move our base from India to the United States of America. Being a young teenager , like all at that age ,I was very excited with the idea of Immigration and becoming an American Citizen, exploring that part of the world I had read so much in the books. Coming from an Armed Forces back ground my life was always adventurous and fast moving with exposure to many states , cities, cultures and wonderful diversity that is India . Like all Fauji (army) kids, as they are called I lived in a very adventurous but protective environment where we are in some way spoilt to the core with comfort , security and down to earth joys of life .I loved that life.

I finished my board exams and we travelled first to UK for a holiday, which was wonderful and mesmerizing, being my first international exposure and then reached the dream destination of all The USA. The first few weeks were like a dream, where everything was perfect, we holidayed in Washington, Orlando and Seattle. Then slowly we were getting into the realities of life and the challenges of new immigrants. I joined a school where I felt lonely and odd because my accent was different than most others and I could not quite understand the spoken language of many Students and vice versa. My way of thinking and also the concept of my public school education was very different in India , but soon my teachers began to understand the inherent strength of my educational knowledge base including the grammatical correctness of my written English which was lacking in my class-mates . Along with this I joined a summer job at the airport where we were supposed to assist passengers in all manners, language, disability, location guidance etc. On the very first day I helped a passenger to a particular destination at the airport, she gave a tip of 5 dollars. I took the money but as soon I reached home, I cried my heart out to my father saying that in India we tip the poor and here I am getting tipped. I was feeling small. My father tried to explain to me that it is the culture here and there is nothing wrong, this is the way of showing courtesy , but I was too upset to understand then . So this was my first experience to the new culture of the west. My work continued through the summer, and I still remember by the end of summer if I was not tipped I use to get upset that I did not make enough pocket money. I met an elderly gentleman a co-worker who I learnt had just retired as a senior manager from Boeing .He told me that he did not necessarily have to work ,he could sit at his big house and just do gardening . He came there just to have fun . At another instance we found a war veteran a USA Marine officer driving a Taxi . He said he did that as a matter of pleasure since in no other occupation he meets so many strangers with whom he enjoys interacting . There I learnt the value of Human Dignity .No work is small ,and no work makes you feel bigger than your life size . Political and business class here have a lot to learn from them .Then I got back to my school. I was gradually getting adjusted in the new environment but missed my life in India to the core. On any opportunity I would be ready to rush back to India. Over the next few years I experienced many aspects of the new society, some were good and some made me think. We often travelled to Vancouver in Canada ,merely two hours of a wonderful scenic drive . Another aspect I learnt that when living abroad Indians are more cohesively Indian than in their home land where they remain rudderless .

My life continued with spells of stay in India and United States Of America. People in India envied me where as I envied them. Then came a phase in my life where I moved forward , did my professional degree and joined Bank of America in the Investment branch. I was doing well professionally and by now had no conflict with the Western life. We generally travelled to India once a year and now I started seeing the positivity in my new resident country also . I started realizing the scope of opportunities there .The quality of life ,whether you are rich or poor , it is essentially the same as you eat similar food, you get quite easily all the basic comforts of life ,there is dignity of labor, dignity of any work you do and most importantly no corruption at the level of common man's life .It took me many years to understand this but I now know for sure what I am today is because of the multiple exposure I got in my life. I do not say that as an Immigrant there would not be problems, definitely there would be because we come from different culture and upbringing and go through the pangs of transformation . But that is all a phase, like the first time a small child is put in a boarding school and cries under a bed sheet.

Today my family members are well settled in United States Of America with children doing very well and getting the best education and Opportunities. I lived in USA for 15 years and have had many opportunities to see the world around , West and East , both offering quality life style to the enterprising fortune seekers . I am back in India ,equally comfortable and running my own Immigration and Visa Company after completing my Masters in International Business. I myself as an immigrant who has seen the best of life in India and then the experience of struggle of a new immigrant, a phase where one wants to run back to the life of home country , now into a phase today where I love both the worlds equally for what they have given me and my family. Leading equipment manufacturers and global automakers operate in Canada, among which General Motors, Toyota, and Ford. Leading bus and track manufacturers have also located in Canada, including Volvo Bus, Motor Coach Industries, and Hino. Each year, Canada receives thousands of immigrants from all over the world. The country welcomes foreign students, temporary foreign workers, immigrants, and refugees from over 200 countries.
Immigrants settle in all provinces and territories, but as the infograph shows, 7 out of 10 newcomers (or 51 percent in 2011) choose to settle in Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto. Most immigrants prefer urban areas to predominantly rural regions. Thus, provinces with large urban centres such as British Columbia and Ontario attract the most immigrants. In fact, the infograph illustrates that 40 percent of all Permanent Residents settle in Ontario, and less than 1 percent chooses Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, and Yukon. The rural regions of the five eastern provinces and Saskatchewan receive the least immigrants. These findings are important in light of the fact that immigration is the main driving force of population growth. The Atlantic provinces receive fewer immigrants, and retention rates are considerably lower. Retention rates range from 43 to 68 percent in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and the Atlantic provinces and from 79 to 91 percent in Quebec, Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario. There are two challenges that call for a community development strategy – to attract immigrant groups to the provinces with lower retention rates and to keep them there. Community development strategies help meet the long-term requirements of the labor market as well as regional skill shortages. The aim is to attract and retain skilled and qualified workers across Canada.
The infograph also presents information about immigrants by gender and offers two graphs, showing the percentage distribution of immigrants by continent and status. Most immigrants come from Asia (79 percent) and the least from Africa (4 percent). The figures are 11 percent for Europe and 6 percent for the United States. These numbers are important given that different population groups may face different and unique challenges. A study by Desai and Subramanian, for example, reveals that adolescents of South Asian origin face adjustment problems in addition to developmental challenges. The reason is that they face conflicts between the culture of origin and the host culture.
The second graph is important in that it shows that immigrants come to Canada with different experiences (business immigrants, economic immigrants, family class, etc). Many of them are selected based on their qualifications and skills. There are myths and misconceptions about immigrants that create negative attitudes toward them. Many believe, for example, that immigrants prefer to live on social assistance and are drain on society. Another myth is that newcomers are uneducated and unskilled and receive special treatment. In fact, the graph illustrates that the majority of newcomers or 63 percent of them are Economic Immigrants, followed by family class (23 percent). The economic class includes provincial nominees, business immigrants, and skilled workers who are selected based on their qualifications, skills, and ability to contribute to Canada’s economy. The group of business immigrants encompasses investors, self-employed people, and entrepreneurs. Refugees and other immigrants represent 11 percent and 3 percent of all immigrants.
Regardless of their status, newcomers are entitled to the same treatment as Canada-born citizens. They have to declare income and pay taxes and receive the same tax credits (Harmonized Sales Tax and Child Tax Benefit) as Canadians. Immigrants are not eligible to receive additional tax credits. Moreover, they rely less on social assistance than other groups.
In sum, the infograph gives an insight into broader immigration trends that can help outline and improve community development strategies, thus facilitating economic growth and wellbeing. The infograph also shows that while different immigrant groups may face different challenges, the majority of newcomers are selected based on skills and educational qualifications.

Work Visa -The misunderstood Concept

My exposure to international travel started at an early age of 15 and I still remember travelers all around me were talking about how to get Work Permits, how to get jobs in order stay abroad for as long as possible. During one of my trips when I was travelling alone I met a young man who was looking for one way or another to get a work permit, or find work under the table, no matter what the type of work, as long as he would earn some type of income. I met people from South Africa, Malaysia, the UK, the U.S. and many other countries with the same goal of making money abroad. Most of them did not have a Work Permit and were lucky that the immigration service were not as strict and stringent as now. Today things are at once a bit easier and a bit more difficult when it comes to working abroad. Increased globalization and global mobility have forced governments to formulate mutual agreements regulating the exchange of skilled and unskilled workers. There are now many ways to work legally and many countries have signed working holiday agreements allowing young people to work and travel in within their borders for up to one year. On the other hand, well paying jobs and careers are more firmly protected from outsiders and are impossible to come by without a lengthy and often discouraging Work Permit application process. In this column I am focusing on the confusing and often misunderstood work permit, to help aspirants get a better idea about what these permits can and cannot do, and how to prepare yourself to get one in the country of your choice.

What Exactly is a Work Visa?


Many countries have complex laws and rules that regulate the influx of foreigners into their countries. In some countries a work permit or Work Visa entitles you to live there, whereas in other countries you need to apply for a separate residency permit once you have been approved for a work permit. If this sounds a bit confusing, brace yourself, because it is. There are almost as many variations of work visas as there are countries who offer them, but I have outlined below a few basic characteristics that all work visas share:

  1. 1.Work permits are dependent upon a job offer or contract from a company- The idea that someone can get a work permit in a country and then look for a job is a myth. A work permit or work visa is always for a specific job that a company offers an individual. A good number of countries maintain a quota for each type of work permit and once the quota is filled, there is nothing you can do during that calendar year to obtain a work permit.

  2. 2.Work permits are for one specific job from one employer only - One element that regular work permits have in common globally is the fact that they are issued for a specific job with one specific employer. In most cases, if you lose that job or would like to change jobs you will have to start the work permit application process all over again.

  3. 3.Work permits have a predetermined time limit- Work permits generally have specific time limitations. They are issued either for the maximum amount of time allowed by law, or they are for the duration of your specific job.

  4. 4.Work permits are issued at the discretion of the government and can be changed and revoked. This means that holding a work permit does not entitle you to anything other than the right to work until that right is revoked by the government. If you lose your job, you also lose your work permit and you will likely have to leave the country.

  5. 5.Most countries require applicants to apply for a work permit from their home country and not after their arrival. There are some exception to this rule, but most governments want foreign job applicants to apply for a work permit at the respective consulate or embassy in their home country, mainly because work permits are the responsibility of the ministry of foreign affairs and governments want Work Permit Applicants to go through the entire application process in correct order and by following the correct procedures.

How Do You Get a Work Permit?

The magic words for obtaining a Work Permit in a foreign country are “needed skills.” If your profession is in highly sought-after fields then you are in luck. The work permit application process for most jobs in most countries is still tedious and time consuming. Another way to work legally in another country is through a direct transfer from your employer in your home country to an overseas branch or subsidiary
